May 17 Worship @ Home Resources

The 6th Sunday of Easter
"Commissioned in God's Name"

Picture
Trinity is Growing Committed Followers of Jesus. We don't want to be passive consumers of worship but people whose lives are an expression of worship to our God.

This service is an opportunity for you and your family to actively enter into worship!

The liturgy (order of worship) below contains responsive readings, prayers, and songs for you to read. If you are worshiping with others in your home, divide up the parts among yourselves!

There are videos for songs (the lyrics are either next to or below the video), the children's time, and the sermon. The rest of the liturgy is there for you to read/participate in.

The italics in the order of worship indicate an action for you to do.

Gathering

Prepare for Worship

As you prepare for this time of worship find a time and space that will allow you to focus on God. (I encourage you to find an hour that can be devoted to uninterrupted worship.)

Perhaps, you could light a candle to mark this as a sacred time.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Christ is Risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Call to Worship
Psalm 66:8-14, 16-20

Read this Psalm responsively to help you enter into a spirit of Worship.
Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard;
he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping
For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver.
You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs.
You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a place of abundance.
Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.
I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue.
If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer.
Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!

Worship in Song

Sing Together:
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
  1. Joyful, joyful we adore thee,
God of glory, Lord of love!
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before thee,
    praising thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
drive the gloom of doubt away.
    Giver of immortal gladness,
fill us with the light of day.

  2. All thy works with joy surround thee
earth and heav'n reflect thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around thee,
    centre of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
    Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea,
    Chanting bird, and flowing fountain
call us to rejoice in thee.

  3. Thou art giving and forgiving,
    ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
    ocean-depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our brother,
    All who live in love are thine;
teach us how to love each other,
lift us to the joy divine!

Confession of Sin & Reminder of our Forgiveness

Confess responsively:
Jesus' disciples were feeling powerless, fearful, and abandoned on the first Easter but Jesus appeared promising His power and presence to them.
He still promises His power and presence in our lives as He extends forgiveness to us.

~Pause to reflect on ways you need Jesus' power, presence, and forgiveness~

Almighty God, I confess that I forget about your power, presence, and forgiveness. I confess that I have not observed all that you have commanded--to love God and to love others.  Instead, I've loved myself more than anyone else.  For this, I am sorry. I desire forgiveness for the ways I've hurt You and others by my sin. Help me live in resurrection life and power.

Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. To all who repent and believe in the gospel, we have the assurance that our sins are forgiven in the power and authority of Jesus' name and that we receive the Holy Spirit who makes us new and sends us out declaring forgiveness and life.

If worshiping alone, make the sign of the cross on your forehead and speak aloud to yourself, "I am forgiven in Jesus' name"
or

If you are worshiping with others, make the sign of the cross on another's forehead speak over them, "You are forgiven in Jesus' name"

Worship in Song

Sing together:
Refiner's Fire
  1. Purify my heart,
let me be as gold and precious silver.
    Purify my heart,
let me be as gold, pure gold.

    Refrain:
    Refiner's Fire
    My heart's one desire
Is to be holy set apart for You, Lord.
    I choose to be holy
Set apart for You my master, ready to do Your will.

  2. Purify my heart
    Cleanse me from within
    and make me holy.
    Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin, deep within.
    Refrain

Confession of Faith

We confess our common belief in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Speak aloud:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sing Together: Word of God Speak
I'm finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it's okay.
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what You would say.

Word of God speak
Would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That you're in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In your holiness
Word of God speak

I'm finding myself in the midst of You
Beyond the music, beyond the noise.
All that I need is to be with You
And in the quiet hear Your voice.

Word of God speak
Would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That you're in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In your holiness
Word of God speak

Word

Scripture Reading from 1 Peter 3:13-22

Read aloud carefully and attentively
13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Scripture Reading from Matthew 28:11-20

Read aloud carefully and attentively.
11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Sending

Benediction

Speak these words of blessing over yourself and your family as a reminder that you have been sent out in the power of our living Lord
As you go from here,
may God flood your lives with a deep love for one another, and for all people.
And may he keep your hearts strong, blameless and holy,
as we together wait for the day when our Lord Jesus will appear again.
Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord.  Amen.
 adapted from 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13

And now may the Lord bless us and keep us.
May the Lord make His face shine upon us and be gracious to us.
May the Lord look on us with favour and give us His peace. Numbers 6:24-26

Worship in Song:

Sing together: I Love to Tell the Story
  1. I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and his love.
    I love to tell the story, because I know it's true;
it satisfies my longing as nothing else would do.

    Refrain:
I love to tell the story; I'll sing this theme in glory
and tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

  2. I love to tell the story: how pleasant to repeat
what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet!
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God's own holy Word.
    Refrain

  3. I love to tell the story; for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
I'll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long.
    Refrain
